Sadly, after an epic final, Federer lost to Nadal 9-7 in the fifth set at Wimbledon. He will probably loose his number 1 ranking in 4 to 8 weeks, depending on his and Nadal's results. Hopefully we will come away with an Olympic Gold Medal or the US title, to have a big title to remember 2008.

It´s dificult to keep heart during the clay court season, specially after the pounding Federer took at the hands of Nadal in yesterdays French Open final.

In the finals of Hamburg and Monte Carlo, he also lost to Nadal (much closer matches that were highly frustrating and nerve-racking to watch, because of all the lost opportunities) and, even worse, in Rome, after Nadal was injured and defeated, he blew an incredible chance to win the title by loosing to Stepanek in the quarters after having set point.

I once read somewhere that, on average, a tennis player spends around four years playing his very best. What makes a tennis player a legend is not playing incredibly well for one or two years (Hewitt, Safin, Rafter, Courier, etc) but being able to extend his career longer than those four years (Connors, Sampras, Agassi, Borg, etc)

Federer took 4 years to "warm up" (1999 to 2003), has had an amazing 4 years at very top of his game (2004 to 2007) and now seems slowly to be winding down. I'm really sad to say this, after all he is still only 26 years old, but at this particular moment he doesn't look like Superman anymore, he seems like a "normal" tennis player, still a top 3 player, but without the aura of invincability of the last 4 years.

From now on, he will have to fight daily for every win and, unlike Nadal on clay, everyone else will step into court with him having the belief they could beat him and, sooner or later, they will.

Also, his number 1 ranking will be up for grabs on a weekly basis from now on, because he had a virtually perfect second half of 2007 and, unless he is able to repeat that, he won't be able to maintain the top spot when the american hard court season begins (and if all goes horribly wrong at Wimbledon, an unthinkable tought last year, he could fall down to number 2 or 3 by the end of the tournament).

Maybe he will bounce back like in 2007, after his losses to Canas and Nadal, but that would take someone with a superhuman mental toughness to just put behind him what happened in the last two months and believe in himself again just as if it never occured...

If it doesn't happen, then this is like watching the end of an era, which had to come at some point, but sadly for him and us all his fans, is arriving much sooner than we expected...

Blog Created - March, 4th, 2007

´
For years now I've been following Roger Federer's tennis career and have been trying to keep up with all the records he has been establishing (by now, new ones are being established almost on a weekly basis).

I have found a lot of tennis sites dedicated to tennis records in general, but not one to Roger Federer in specific, so it´s about time one finally showed up, since, although he is still only 25 years old, he already has more records than all the other players in the history of tennis combined; also, all of those sites have some of the records, but not one (at least that I could find) has all of them neatly packed together.

Also, assuming he (Roger) doesn't injure himself, doesn´t get burnt out and retires at 26 like Bjorn Borg and dosen't get stabbed like Monica Seles, and assuming he has at least 3 or 4 more years at the top of his game, it's fun to try and predict when we will break the few records he doesn´t yet have.

So, there you have it: I hope that anyone that stumbles on to this blog by accident finds ir usefull and returns; and I hope that I'm not breaking any copywright laws by searching, copying and pasting together this information from several other sites; just in case there are any lawyers out there that want to file huge suits for "non quotation of source", or whatever, on the left side of the blog there era a series of links from all the sites I used in gathering up all this information.

Just one last thing: this blog doesn´t intend to cover all of tennis´ results and statistics (hey, I have some free time, but that not that much). This blog focuses only on Roger Federer's stats and records in particular; any other players will only be mentioned if they are in front of him on a specific record (for now, at least...) or to put a Federer record in perspective, and, even then, detailed information related to the other player(s) is most likely incomplete or non existent. So please don´t feel ofended if the name of your favourite player doesn´t show up anywhere on this blog; for that you can check some of the links on the left or run a search on google.

UPDATE: March, 6th, 2007

I´ve finally finished compiling all of Federer's data; I want to thank everyone who typed all the tennis data that's available on the web, specially the guy(s) at tennis28, where I picked up most of the facts I used.

The information is divided in to five diferent categories, as you can see on the top left; if anything is missing, wrong or out of date, feel free to tell me about it so I can correct it.

It seems that there are other Federer dedicated sites and blogs after all; two that I found today are

http://www.answers.com/topic/roger-federer

and

http://federermagic.blogspot.com/

Although I didn´t use any of their data, they were very usefull in confirming all the information from the other sites.
